Many have written books or articles that the OSU 1968 football team was the team that saved Ohio State football!
Many felt the Woofy Hayes job was in trouble going into that 1968 season!
Since the recruiting of the Super Soph class of 1967 was ineligible to play till 1968 , it is very possible that is a true statement , about Coach Hayes job!
The Super Soph class consisted oh 11 First team consensus All American High School plsyers! Naming a few were Rex Kern, John Brockington, Ron Maciejowski, Ted Provost, Mike Sensibaugh, Jan White, Jim Stillwagon, Jack Tatum and Larry Zelina!
That 1968 class went undefeated in 9 games and was squared up aganist USC and OJ Simpson in the 1968 ( played 1/1/69) Rose Bowl. The National Championship was on the line. OSU was ranked #1 and USC was #2 in the polls!

An attendance of 102,063 settled in for that Rose Bowl on 1-1-1969 to watch the Buckeyes and Trogans to square off!
Could the OSU Defense contain the stout offense of USC and OJ in tow? Lou Holtz was hired as Defensive Coach for that 1968 season.
A Buckeye win would give the Buckeyes a Natty after an 8 year drought(1961)Woodys job would be saved !

My father and I went to the Game .Great Memories. Rex Kern was a local Lancaster Grad who was a very good Basketball player. My older Sister dated one of Rex Kern team-mates on the Lancaster OH Basketball Team Terry Weeb. Rex went on to Ohio State Terry went on to Vietnam and was killed in 1969. Rex has always been a very nice a class act during and after Terry Death. Rex help I believe in starting Christian Athletes ✝️. Great Team

Rex was indeed a neat Christian guy and leader. One quick story about thst Super Soph team - in the Soring game prior to the 1968 season coming up, Woody still was holding out these super Sophs for the coming up season. A buddy and me went down to the Soring game and at half time it was a snoozer. The Varsity was up 6-3 over the reserves and Woody decided to play the Reserves in the 2nd half. Well , the Super Sophs we’re on the Reserves.
Me and my friend , bored to death decided to go over to Troutman Field and wstch the OSU baseball team , Duh! Final score of the Soring game 56-9 Reserves over the Varsity! Super Sophs and Rex Kern went nuts! What were we thinking!

Some of the team in 1970s were assisting Teaching at my High School in the 1970s. Played Donkey Basketball against Randy Gradisar and a few anothers. Jake Tatum wore Amry Camouflage a few time walking aroundmy High School. I was lucky enough to go to all of the games with my Dad including Ohio State beating #1 Prudue.
