Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open?

There are 156 golfers entering golf's third major tournament of the year starting on Thursday, but only one can walk away the champion. As the golfers prepare for later this week, USA TODAY has ranked the top contenders by their betting odds from BetMGM.

Unsurprisingly, Scottie Scheffler, Official World Golf Ranking's No. 1 golfer, is currently listed as the favorite to win. Scheffler won his second green jacket at the Masters this April and is coming off of a win at the Memorial Tournament last weekend. Sportsbooks are clearly siding with the golfer in the midst of an impressive run of dominance, having just remained the world's top golfer for a 94th straight week.

Currently trailing Scheffler in odds are some of the other top golfers according to the latest rankings, as well as a few that have also played well in recent tournaments.

Here are the power rankings for the top golfers in the 2024 U.S. Open's 156-man field.

2024 U.S. Open power rankings: Odds for top golfers at Pinehurst

1. Scottie Scheffler (+333)

Scheffler is the world's No. 1 ranked golfer and just picked up his 11th career PGA Tour win at the Memorial Tournament last weekend. Earlier this year, he won the Masters for a second time. The New Jersey native is still seeking his first win at the U.S. Open after finishing second in 2022 and third in 2023. That bit of extra motivation during this streak of strong performances by Scheffler could be enough to push him over the top.

2. Xander Schauffele (+1100)

Schauffele became the second-ranked golfer in the world with his big win at the PGA Championship last month. It was his first career major win, and he did it in part by breaking the Valhalla course record with a 9-under-62 on Thursday. That mark also tied an all-time low round in majors. This week, Schauffele will get the chance to add a second major win to his résumé. His highest finish at the U.S. Open entering this week was a tie for third in 2019, though he's finished in the top 10 in all but one year that he's competed in it (six out of seven times).

3. Rory McIlroy (+1200)

Continuing the trend atop the odds board, McIlroy is the No. 3 golfer in the world according to the latest Official World Golf Ranking. The 2023 runner-up enters this week looking for his fifth win in a major and first U.S. Open win since his third time competing, in 2011. The Northern Irish golfer has two tournament wins this year – at the Wells Fargo Championship and Hero Dubai Desert Classic – but hasn't had strong performances in majors so far. McIlroy finished tied for 22nd at the Masters and tied for 12th at the PGA Championship. Pinehurst will be an opportunity for him to turn things back around.

4. Collin Morikawa (+1400)

Morikawa is not the world's No. 4 ranked golfer... yet. The 27-year-old American – ranked seventh as of Wednesday – has had a very strong year so far with top-four finishes in each of the year's first two major tournaments and four more top-10 finishes in other tournaments. Most recently, Morikawa lost to Scheffler by one stroke at the Memorial Tournament last weekend. The American has won the PGA Championship (2020) and The Open Championship (2021) but is still looking for his first U.S. Open victory.

T-5. Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland (+2000)

Hovland is the fifth-ranked golfer in the world, and Åberg is right behind him at sixth. DeChambeau is currently ranked 38th. All three have had their own strong performances in this year's majors so far.

Hovland missed the cut at the Masters but finished third at the PGA Championship, three strokes behind Schauffele. Åberg finished second at the Masters, four strokes behind Scheffler, though he missed the cut at the PGA Championship. And DeChambeau was eighth at the Masters and the runner-up by one stroke at the PGA Championship. All three will look to get over the hump for a major win this week.
