School’s out for summer, but after Abbott Elementary‘s eventful Season 3 finale, fans will be counting down the days until class is back in session.

If you’ve seen Season 3, Episode 14, “Party,” you know that Janine (Quinta Brunson) threw an epic last-day-of-school bash that ended with a long-awaited kiss and lots of burning questions.

Ahead of the exciting episode, Decider spoke with Tyler James Williams — who plays one of our favorite Abbott educators, Gregory Eddie — to break down the major finale moments, reflect on Season 3 memories, and tease what the future may hold for ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy.

Will There Be an Abbott ElementarySeason 4 on ABC?

Great news, Abbott Elementary fans! Janine and the rest of our favorite Philly educators will be back for another school year. Less than a week afterAbbott Elementary‘s supersized Season 3 premiere, ABC granted the series an early Season 4 renewal. The network announced thatAbbott Elementarywould be returning for a fourth season during the 2024 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour on February 10, with help from William Stanford Davis, akaAbbott‘s very own Mr. Johnson.

The workplace mockumentary “delivered a 3.56 rating in Adults 18-49 after 35 days of viewing across platforms, marking the strongest season average for an ABC comedy since the 2019-2020 season,” ABC revealed in a press release, noting that the series also ranked as the network’s most successful multi-platform series with next-day streaming on Hulu.

As noted in a previous piece, afterSeason 2 concludedin April 2023,Abbott‘s writers’ room was set to swiftly reopen on May 1 when the Writers Guild of America embarked on what would become a historic 148-daystrike. SAG-AFTRA shortly followed suit, and with tens of thousands of writers and actors picketing, production on numerous television series and films — including the beloved ABC comedy — was delayed. The strikes concluded in Fall 2023, but like numerous other series, Abbott received a shorter episode order, getting 14 episodes in Season 3 instead of the expected 22.

It’s unclear how many episodes Season 4 will consist of at this time, but we do have an idea of when new episodes will premiere…

Abbott Elementary Season 4 Premiere Date: When Does Abbott Elementary Return With New Episodes?

Though Abbott Elementary Season 4 doesn’t have a set premiere date at this time, we do know it’s premiering on ABC in 2024. The network recently announced its Fall 2024-2025 Primetime TV Schedule, revealing that Abbott Elementary will continue to air on Wednesdays. This season, however, the series will have the honor of premiering after 90-minute episodes of The Golden Bachelorette, starring Joan Vassos.

Season 4 episodes of Abbott will air Wednesdays from 9:30 p.m. ET to 10:00 p.m. ET. Though an exact premiere date is unknown, Tyler James Williams did tease what fans can expect from the new season.

Following Janine and Gregory’s big Season 3 finale kiss, Williams told Decider, “I think the biggest tease I can give you is this isn’t an answer. This actually brings up more questions. I think people initially are going to see it as an answer. But when you really sit down and think about it, we have to explore all of these questions. And this isn’t a definitive. The show doesn’t stop here. If anything, it feels like it just got started.”

If Janine and Gregory’s romance does blossom over the summer, Williams says there will “definitely” be challenges once the school year starts back up. “The only person who really knows probably what happened is Jacob. We now have to kind of reveal it to the rest of the school, or maybe not, or maybe keep it a secret. That’s the hemming and hawing of, well, do we try to play this close to the vest? Do we try to just be professional at work and something else outside? What is that something else outside?” Williams explained. “So there’s a number of things. Now there’s more questions than there are answers. It doesn’t really answer anything. [Laughs] As I was doing my script breakdown, I was like, ‘Oh, great moment! This is not an answer! This is more questions!'”

From the Season 3 premiere — when Philadelphia Eagles players Jalen Hurts, Brandon Graham, and Jason Kelce appeared on the show — Abbott Elementary significantly stepped up its guest star game, and Williams doesn’t think the jaw-dropping cameos will be stopping any time soon. The actor shared his most star-struck Season 3 moment was when Bradley Cooper dropped by to shoot a cold open, but he also said he has high hopes for future guest stars.

“I’ve always liked the idea of Solange coming in, because I love Gregory interacting with women that make him uncomfortable, or who he finds himself imitated by. And I feel like there’s something there. There could be. Whether it’s a cousin, or something like that. Initially, I think I tried to pitch it to Quinta as a sister, but then we established that shortly after Gregory was born, his mom died. But yeah, I think it would be filling out Gregory’s family more. We don’t know a lot about them,” Williams said. “There’s so many options. There’s also this Philly native thing —like getting Will Smith in here somewhere would be fun, because he is actually from Philly. That could be interesting, but I don’t know if Will Smith is Will Smith in our world. That’s one thing we’d have to address.”
