The AVIC J-35 is the Chinese answer to the American Lockheed F-35 "Lightning II" strike fighter. The design borrows heavily from the proven American stealth platform increasing its hold in Western inventories. The Chinese approach is born from the earlier Shenyang FC-31 airframe of 2014 (detailed elsewhere on this site) and this same design has been progressively revised to better conform with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) service and its requirement for a new, all-modern stealth fighter to operate from its equally new, all-modern Type-003 (Fujian-class) nuclear-powered aircraft carrier currently under development (and detailed elsewhere on the Military Factory).

"J-35" appears to be an unofficial designation while the project aircraft has also been recognized as the "J-XY".

Similarities between the Chinese J-35 and the American Lockheed F-22 "Raptor" and F-35 platforms abound: as in the F-22 and F-35, the intakes are blended into the sides of the aircraft, angled with the frame's general contours, and aspirate a pair of afterburning turbofan engines buried within the fuselage. Unlike the F-22, however, the Chinese J-35 has conventional, circular exhaust ports which are known to be less stealthy - though its saw-tooth design helps some in that regard. The mainplanes utilized the same "diamond" shaped styling common to the American F-22 and F-35 series jets and the tailplanes include a pair of outward-canted vertical fins (as in the F-22 and F-35) as well as all-moving horizontal tailplanes for maximized agility. Landing gear doors sport the familiar saw-tooth edges common to American 5th generation stealth aircraft. The single-piece canopy is hinged to open forward as in the F-35. A retractable, wheeled undercarriage is featured for ground-running, the main legs supported by single wheels while the nose leg has a double-wheeled arrangement consistent with carrier-based combat aircraft.

Air-launched armament will be held / mounted internally and externally, the former made possible by an array of internal weapons bays (as in the F-22 and F-35). External weapons will, of course, make the fighter more visible to scanning radar systems.

As with other naval combat aircraft, the undercarriage is reinforced for the rigors of carrier deck operations. An arrestor hook is also implemented to slow / stop the aircraft's roll once landed.

As of this writing (2023), the J-35 continues its flight testing phase.
